SEWA: Swaccha Aakash Campaign BUILDING CLEANER SKIES Second Annual Report

August 2025 | English

The Swachh Aakash (Clean Sky) Campaign by SEWA is a women-led climate action initiative aimed at building a sustainable and climate-resilient future for informal sector women workers. It was inspired by SEWA’s 50th anniversary reflection on the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.

Climate change is heavily impacting poor and informal women workers such as farmers, waste pickers, street vendors, salt workers, and construction workers. They face extreme heat, floods, droughts, and pollution with very limited protection or support systems.

To address this, SEWA’s campaign focuses on turning these women from climate-affected workers into climate solution leaders.

The campaign is built on four key areas: clean energy, clean land, clean air, and clean water, and works through three main approaches—awareness building, practical on-ground action, and policy advocacy.

Under the campaign, SEWA has reached lakhs of women through climate education, training, and awareness programs. On the ground, women have adopted clean energy solutions like biogas and solar, improved waste management systems, planted trees, and created green villages. New livelihood models such as solar parks, electric mobility, and green skill training have improved incomes and reduced emissions.

The campaign also includes strong support systems like climate insurance, livelihood recovery funds, healthcare programs, and digital financial access to protect women during climate shocks. Overall, the Swachh Aakash Campaign shows how grassroots women’s collective action can create meaningful climate solutions while improving livelihoods, health, and dignity.
