Hidden in Plain Sight: Preventing Modern Slavery at Work
July 2026 | English
Modern slavery remains hidden in many workplaces and supply chains, creating significant risks to workers' safety, health and wellbeing. In this white paper, IOSH examines where organisations fall short in identifying, preventing and responding to modern slavery risks and highlights the practical actions needed to strengthen worker protection. The paper recognises that vulnerable workers are often at greater risk of exploitation and that effective prevention requires collaboration between governments, businesses, occupational safety and health professionals and other stakeholders.
Drawing on evidence and practical insights, the publication explores how organisations can strengthen governance, improve due diligence processes, increase supply chain transparency and embed worker-focused approaches within their operations. The paper emphasises the importance of integrating occupational safety and health considerations into efforts to prevent labour exploitation and promote decent work.
IOSH calls for stronger action to ensure that worker safety, health, wellbeing and fundamental rights are protected across global supply chains. By helping organisations recognise warning signs, address systemic weaknesses and implement effective controls, the paper provides practical recommendations that support responsible business practices and help create safer, healthier and more equitable working environments.
The contribution aligns with the Global Coalition for Social Justice's objective of advancing human dignity, labour rights and inclusive economic development by supporting efforts to tackle worker exploitation and ensure that all workers can benefit from safe and healthy working conditions.
